Danielle Reich
Danielle Reich found her way to Houston in 1999. She came to Texas from Florida, where her parents launched her musical voyage by making her clap along with the radio on road trips until she had a reasonable sense of time. This led to piano lessons, a love affair with 1940s musicals, high school choir trips, and a degree in classical vocal performance from the University of Florida.
The path from Gator Country to Houston Grand Opera chorister to jazz vocalist has been a little circuitous, and very rewarding. Danielle’s classical training lends substance, depth, and flexibility to her jazz singing. By working with the some of the finest jazz musicians in Houston, she has received an on-the-job education in the jazz idiom. This has led a unique singing style that combines classical technique with a great feel for jazz. She is frequently described as having the “authentic sound of a 1930s and 40s era singer.”
Danielle’s eclectic musical interests have led to an adventurous repertoire that is rooted in jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, but continues to grow in several directions. She has beautiful interpretations of Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and other American popular artists. She also has a love of French music, and has added songs by Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf to her set lists, in addition to a smattering of Spanish and Italian songs.
Danielle is currently planning her first full-length CD. Meanwhile, she keeps up an active performance calendar with a revolving group of jazz professionals including Ray Wilson, Josh Breier, Clayton Dyess, and Kelly Lancaster. Danielle appears regularly at venues such as the King Biscuit Patio Cafe, Vintropolis Wine Bar, The Tasting Room Uptown Park, and Ouisie’s Table. Her group performs at other venues as well, including community events such as the First Saturday Arts Market. She was one of several Houston musicians featured on the Deborah Duncan show in August of 2008.
